Reciprocal IVF Cost: A Two-Partner Planning Guide
See what reciprocal IVF can cost, which services involve both partners, how insurance works and why legal access differs by country.
The short answer
Reciprocal IVF allows one partner to provide eggs and the other to carry the pregnancy. In the United States, a realistic self-pay planning range is often $20,000–$40,000+ for one retrieval and transfer pathway. Cost rises because both partners need evaluation and because donor sperm, IVF laboratory services, storage and legal planning may be involved.
What creates the total
| Component | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Evaluation of both partners | Ovarian reserve, uterine assessment, infectious-disease and general health screening |
| Egg-provider medication and monitoring | Dose and pharmacy coverage vary |
| Retrieval, anesthesia and IVF laboratory | Base clinic package may not include every service |
| Donor sperm | Vial, shipping, storage and sometimes multiple vials |
| ICSI or embryo testing | Optional or indication-specific add-ons |
| Carrier preparation and frozen transfer | Often billed separately |
| Embryo storage | Recurring annual cost |
| Legal work | Parentage, consent and jurisdiction-specific documents |
Ask whether a quote includes one transfer and what happens if there is no embryo to transfer.
Reciprocal IVF insurance
Coverage may be fragmented: one partner’s plan may cover evaluation, another may cover treatment, and donor sperm or storage may be excluded. Some plans require an infertility diagnosis that does not fit LGBTQ+ family building. Request written confirmation for both partners, including medication benefits and prior authorization.
United Kingdom and India context
UK private IVF averages about £5,000 for a standard cycle according to the HFEA, but reciprocal IVF requires additional two-partner screening, donor sperm and often a separate frozen transfer; private quotes can therefore be materially higher. NHS funding varies locally.
In India, basic IVF prices are often lower, but do not assume reciprocal IVF is legally available. The Assisted Reproductive Technology framework ties eligibility and service rules to legally defined categories, and access for same-sex couples or some family structures may be restricted or uncertain. Before travel, verify eligibility with an ART-registered clinic and obtain independent Indian legal advice. Neena is not giving a legal interpretation.
Compare more than the price
Review clinic experience with LGBTQ+ families, consent language, donor screening, whose names appear in records, embryo ownership, parentage pathway, travel requirements and inclusive communication. No clinic can guarantee embryos, pregnancy or live birth.
Make the planning conversation easier
A Neena fertility specialist coach can help you organize quotes and questions for clinics, insurers and independent legal counsel. Coaching does not recommend a clinic, interpret law, design a protocol or predict success.
Frequently asked questions
Is reciprocal IVF more expensive than standard IVF?
Often, because both partners are evaluated and donor sperm, carrier preparation, legal work and a separate transfer may be added.
Can both partners use insurance?
Possibly, but benefits do not automatically coordinate. Verify each service under each member’s plan.
Is reciprocal IVF available in India?
Do not rely on a clinic advertisement alone. Eligibility may be legally restricted; confirm with a registered clinic and qualified Indian lawyer before making travel or payment commitments.
