The short answer
A standard laboratory semen analysis often costs about $100–$300 in the United States without insurance. In India, many current private-clinic estimates are roughly ₹500–₹1,500, with city and laboratory differences. Consultation, repeat collections and advanced tests can raise the total.
What the standard fee should include
A comprehensive semen analysis commonly reports volume, sperm concentration, total count, motility and morphology using laboratory methods. Ask whether collection supplies, private collection room, report, clinician review and taxes are included.
Why the cost may be higher
- reproductive-urology or fertility consultation;
- repeat semen analysis because results vary biologically;
- collection through a specialized condom or surgical retrieval;
- sperm culture when clinically indicated;
- DNA-fragmentation or other advanced testing;
- cryopreservation and annual storage.
The AUA/ASRM guideline recommends one or more semen analyses as part of initial male fertility evaluation, with specialist assessment when parameters are abnormal. Advanced tests are not automatic first-line purchases.
At-home test versus laboratory analysis
Home kits may cost less—some U.S. direct-to-consumer options are under $100—but many assess only concentration or motility. A reassuring home result cannot rule out all male-factor infertility, and an abnormal result needs confirmation in a clinical laboratory. Check whether the kit mails a sample to an accredited lab or uses a limited smartphone/device estimate.
Insurance and payment
Coverage depends on whether the test is diagnostic, the plan’s infertility benefits and the laboratory network. Ask for the test code and whether clinician interpretation is billed separately. In India, compare NABL-accredited laboratory services and fertility-clinic packages; a low price is not useful if collection or analysis standards are unclear.
Preparing for collection
Follow the laboratory’s abstinence window, container, transport and timing instructions. Fever, recent illness, heat exposure and incomplete collection can affect results. Do not interpret one abnormal parameter as proof of infertility; results must be considered together and may need repeating.
